Frontend JDs have a specific failure mode: they list the entire React ecosystem as requirements ("React, Redux, Zustand, React Query, Tanstack Query, Next.js, Remix, Vite, Webpack, Tailwind, styled-components, Storybook, Jest, Vitest, Cypress, Playwright...") while saying nothing about the actual technical challenges the engineer will face.
Instead of: "We are looking for a talented Frontend Engineer to build high-quality, performant, and accessible web applications using modern JavaScript technologies including React, TypeScript, and our design system..."
Write:
"Our frontend is Next.js 14 (App Router), TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and React Query. Our Lighthouse performance score on the dashboard page is 54 — primarily driven by a 1.9MB JavaScript bundle and a 4.1s LCP caused by client-side rendering of above-the-fold content. Our Core Web Vitals data from CrUX shows p75 LCP at 3.8s on mobile. Your first project will be a rendering strategy audit and selective SSR implementation for the three highest-traffic pages. We have a design system in Storybook with 40 components; you will maintain and extend it. TypeScript strict mode is enabled; we do not accept any. Our WCAG target is AA compliance."
The second version communicates the specific technical challenge (bundle size, rendering strategy) and the quality standard (TypeScript strict mode, WCAG AA). An engineer who has done this exact work before will recognize the problem immediately. An engineer who has not will know whether they want to learn it.

Candidates who cannot read a WebPageTest waterfall and identify the primary LCP bottleneck have not worked seriously on frontend performance — regardless of how many years of React experience their resume shows.
The core failure in frontend screening is the coding challenge that tests JavaScript algorithm implementation — fizzbuzz, binary tree traversal, array manipulation. These tests tell you whether a candidate can implement algorithms in JavaScript. They tell you almost nothing about whether they can build a maintainable, performant, accessible user interface in production.
The screen must test for the problems frontend engineers actually face: rendering performance, state management complexity, accessibility implementation, and the ability to read a slow application's performance profile and identify what is wrong.
Five written questions. No screen share, no time pressure. The written format tests the communication clarity that determines whether code reviews, architecture documents, and technical ADRs from this engineer will be useful.
Questions that reveal real depth:
Walk me through a frontend performance investigation you ran on a production application. What was the symptom, what tools did you use to investigate it (Lighthouse, WebPageTest, Chrome DevTools Performance tab, CrUX data, Real User Monitoring?), what was the root cause at the rendering or loading mechanism level, what did you change, and what were the Core Web Vitals before and after? Give me specific numbers: LCP, INP (or FID), CLS, and any bundle size changes.
You are designing the state management architecture for a multi-tenant B2B SaaS application. The application has: user authentication state (persisted across sessions), organization-level feature flags and permissions (updated in real time when an admin changes them), server data from 12 REST endpoints with different staleness tolerance (some can be cached for 5 minutes, some must be fresh on every navigation), real-time notifications via WebSocket, and complex multi-step form state with conditional validation. Walk me through your state management architecture: what you put where and why, what library choices you make for each category of state, and specifically — what changes about this architecture if the application has 3 engineers vs. 15 engineers working on it?
A colleague has submitted a PR that implements a new feature correctly from a functionality perspective. You identify three issues: (1) the <img> tag for the hero image has no width and height attributes, causing layout shift as the image loads (CLS impact); (2) the interactive button uses a <div onClick> instead of a <button>, breaking keyboard navigation and screen reader semantics; (3) the component re-renders on every parent state change because the expensive filter function inside the component body is not memoized. For each issue: write the specific code review comment you would leave — a comment that explains the underlying principle, not just the fix.
What you are looking for: In question one, the absence of specific numbers is a red flag — any engineer who has genuinely investigated a production performance problem has numbers, because performance work without measurement is guesswork. In question three, the comment that says "use <button> instead of <div>" has identified the problem; the comment that says "a <div> with onClick is not keyboard-focusable by default and is not recognized as an interactive element by screen readers — <button> carries implicit ARIA role, focus management, and keyboard event handling that you would have to reimplement manually" has taught the principle.
Red flag: A response to the state management question that proposes a single state management solution for all five categories without acknowledging that different categories of state have different freshness, persistence, and invalidation requirements. In 2026, the correct answer almost always uses at least two approaches (e.g., Zustand for client state + React Query for server state) and the reasoning for the split is the content of the answer.
One senior frontend engineer from your team plus the hiring manager:
Your senior frontend engineer. Use the candidate's own work as the interview script: their open-source contributions, their async exercise, or their described projects. Go one level deeper on every claim. If they described fixing a CLS issue, ask what the cumulative layout shift score was before and after. If they described implementing accessible modals, ask about focus management on modal open and the specific ARIA pattern they used (modal dialog vs. dialog role, focus trap implementation). Specificity is the signal.
Present a realistic frontend architecture challenge for your specific product domain. For a B2B SaaS application: "Design the component architecture for a data table that supports 10,000 rows, column sorting, multi-column filtering, inline editing, row selection for bulk actions, and column visibility customization. Users will have different permission levels that affect which rows they can edit and which columns they can see." Evaluate: do they immediately jump to "use react-table" or do they first ask about the UX requirements, the data fetching model, and the performance constraints? The engineer who reaches for a library before understanding the problem is not designing — they are pattern-matching.
Provide a real PR from your frontend codebase — one that contains 2–3 issues of varying severity spanning performance, accessibility, and TypeScript usage. Ask the candidate to review it as they would in their daily work. This exercise produces the most directly comparable signal to their actual work product. A code review that identifies the TypeScript any escape is surface-level. A code review that identifies the any escape, explains why the type can actually be derived using a generic type parameter, and provides the specific TypeScript syntax to do so is demonstrating genuine TypeScript depth.
Engineering Manager or Tech Lead. One specific question: describe a frontend decision you made that caused a production problem — not a backend bug that broke the frontend, but a frontend decision that created a user-facing issue. How did you diagnose it, what did you communicate, and what did you change in your development practice as a result? The engineer who has never caused a production issue through a frontend decision has either not been working in production or is not being honest. The quality of the learning and the specificity of the practice change are the signals.

Performance specialists and design system engineers command a premium at senior+ levels that reflects the genuine scarcity of engineers who combine UI implementation skill with systems performance thinking.

For ongoing product development work, full-time is preferred — the context investment required to build maintainable frontend code in a complex product is high, and the context loss on a contract cycle is expensive.
Week 1–2: Audit before code Before the new engineer writes a single line of production code, they should audit the current state of the frontend: run a Lighthouse audit on the five highest-traffic pages, run an axe accessibility audit on the same pages, profile the JavaScript bundle composition using source-map-explorer or Bundle Buddy, and run the application through a screen reader for 30 minutes. Produce a written report: what is the current Core Web Vitals status, what are the top 3 accessibility violations, what are the top 3 contributors to bundle size, and what do they see when they navigate with keyboard-only.
Give them full development environment access before day one: repository, CI configuration, staging access, real user monitoring data (if it exists), and the Figma design files. A frontend engineer who starts without access to the performance monitoring data cannot see the production impact of their work.
Week 3–4: The first component The first PR should be a new component or a modification of an existing component — something visible in the product that the team can review. The technical quality of this first PR tells the team what kind of engineering this person does by default: Are the types specific or broadly typed? Are edge states (loading, error, empty) handled? Is the component keyboard-navigable? Are the accessibility attributes correct? Is there a Storybook story? The answers to these questions reveal default engineering habits that are much harder to change after 6 months than they are to establish in week four.
Month 2: First performance initiative Assign ownership of one measurable performance improvement. Not a vague "improve performance" mandate — a specific target: "reduce the LCP on the dashboard page from 3.8s to under 2.5s at p75 mobile." The engineer designs the investigation, proposes the intervention, implements it, ships it, and reports the before/after CrUX data. The specific measurement discipline required by this assignment — using real user data rather than synthetic Lighthouse scores — teaches the correct performance measurement methodology while producing a visible, business-relevant improvement.
Month 3: First incident as owner Every frontend engineer working on a production application will eventually ship a regression. The question is not whether it happens but what they do when it does. If a regression has not occurred naturally, introduce one intentionally in staging — a simulated CLS regression, a bundle size increase from a dependency change, an accessible component that lost keyboard focus management after a refactor. Observe how they diagnose, fix, and communicate the issue. A frontend engineer who catches their own regression in staging, fixes it before it reaches production, and writes a concise PR description explaining what broke and how they fixed it has developed the production ownership instinct that is the defining characteristic of a senior frontend engineer.
Frontend engineering is the discipline that determines whether users experience your product as fast, accessible, and trustworthy — or slow, broken, and frustrating. The engineers who understand that they are building for the user on a slow connection, the user with a disability, and the search crawler — not just for the developer on a MacBook Pro on a fast connection — are the ones whose work compounds product quality over time. The ones who do not understand this build technical debt that users experience as friction and the business experiences as churn.
